We’re excited to introduce you to Pittsburgh Concert Chorale’s new executive director, Sonya Shumway! Sonya will work with the Board of Directors to manage the choir and plan for future seasons and events.
Sonya first joined PCC in January of 2015. Music and singing have always been a part of Sonya’s life–she sang in her college choir, and she and her husband both sing in their church choir.
“I love choral singing. There is something special about people singing together–when you sing, your body is the instrument. So there's a magic that happens when you sing together. That is unlike any other experience I've ever had in my life,” Sonya said. “And I just crave it, I love it. And to have a conductor like Susan who is so good at what she does, and who brings a wealth of knowledge and a wealth of expertise…It's just wonderful.”
Before PCC, Sonya was on the board of Children's Festival Chorus, now called Pittsburgh Youth Chorus, and served as the organization’s executive director for two years. She has a 30-year history of experience in fundraising and nonprofits, and is looking forward to pushing PCC towards new dreams and new heights in upcoming seasons.
Sonya is already looking ahead to our upcoming 40th Anniversary celebration in a few years, and in the near term, she hopes to expand PCC’s performances to new venues and audiences.
