The Strategic Planning Process

Leadership Group

During the 2022-2023 season the Pittsburgh Concert Chorale (PCC) Board of Directors undertook a new strategic planning process and charged the Board President, Dr. Alexandra Gregory, with leading this effort. The leadership group included Executive Director, Sonya Shumway, Music Director, Dr. Susan Medley, and Thomas Walters, Strategic Planning co-chair.

Model

The Board adopted Michael Kaiser’s “The Cycle: A Practical Approach to Managing Arts Organizations.” This planning model responded to the Board’s stated goal to have a strategic plan that actively guides the PCC in its activities and results.

Focus Group

In January 2023 the leadership group convened a focus group with invited members who represented a diversity of opinions, ages, and years of experience with the PCC and who would speak up and express their opinions. The purpose of this meeting was to review the current mission and vision of the PCC, to develop core values, to be introduced to “The Cycle,” and to conduct an organizational analysis.

Next Steps

The Board of Directors adopted the proposed foundational statements (mission, vision and core values) and “The Cycle” as its strategic planning model during its February 13, 2023 meeting. During spring and early summer 2023 each board committee identified 3-5 goals to be completed in the three-year period of the strategic plan (23-24 through 25-26).

Implementation and Evaluation

The The Strategic Plan for 2024-2026 is designed to become a three year rolling process. Results in each area will be briefly reviewed at each board meeting to ensure accountability and progress in meeting goals. At its September board retreat meeting, along with a progress report on the annual goals for the previous fiscal year, the updated plan will be reviewed and roll into a new three-year period.
