About Our Music Director
Dr. Susan Medley
Susan Medley is the Music Director of the Pittsburgh Concert Chorale. In addition, she is Director of Choral Activities and Professor of Music at Washington & Jefferson College. She served as Music Director of the Junior Mendelssohn Choir from 2009-2013 and was Associate Conductor of the Mendelssohn Choir of Pittsburgh from 2008-2012.
Under Dr. Medley’s direction, the Pittsburgh Concert Chorale has appeared at Chautauqua Institution, on the Great Artists Concert Series at the Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine in New York City, as featured performers in the Festival Concert for the National Convocation of the Fellowship of United Methodists in Music and Worship Arts, at the Three Rivers Arts Festival, and at PNC Park. She has led the W&J Camerata Singers in performances at state and regional music education conferences, and by invitation at Carnegie Hall's Weill Recital Hall and the Cathedral Church of St. John the Divine in New York City.
In the summer of 2018, Dr. Medley led the Pittsburgh Concert Chorale on a concert tour of Italy, conducting performances in Rome, Florence, Ravenna and Venice. She has also conducted current and alumni singers from W&J in concerts in Prague, Vienna, Linz, and Salzburg. In 2010 the W&J Camerata Singers became the first recipients of the American Prize in Choral Performance, College/University Division. The Junior Mendelssohn Choir followed suit in 2011, winning The American Prize in Choral Performance, High School Division.
Prior to coming to the Pittsburgh area, Dr. Medley served as Associate Director of Education at Carnegie Hall in New York City and founding conductor of the Carnegie Hall High School Choral Festivals. She also held the position of Music Director of The Central City Chorus, a 60-voice community chorus that performed three annual concerts in midtown Manhattan. Medley's choral work has taken her to Malaysia, where she served as guest conductor of the 2006 Kuala Lumpur Young Singers Choral Festival and led workshops for choirs and conductors throughout the country.
Dr. Medley has served the profession as President of the American Choral Directors Association-Pennsylvania (2017-19), ACDA-PA Vice President (2019-2021), and various other offices.
The 2011 recipient of the PMEA District 1 Citation of Excellence, Susan Medley holds a Doctor of Musical Arts degree in choral conducting with a cognate in music theory from the University of Cincinnati College-Conservatory of Music. She holds an M.M. in accompanying from the University of Akron and a B.M. in music education summa cum laude from Kent State University, where she studied piano with Naumburg Award-winning pianist Margaret Baxtresser.
