PITTSBURGH CONCERT CHORALE
ANNOUNCES SPECIAL PERFORMANCES
Chorale Presents Special Summer Performance
at Historic Chautauqua Institution
On Sunday, July 24, 2011,
the Pittsburgh Concert Chorale took part in two special summer programs
at Chautauqua Institution near Jamestown, New York.
“I am very excited for the Pittsburgh Concert Chorale to sing at Chautauqua.
Making music with the Chautauqua Choir in such a beautiful location will
be an unforgettable experience for all of us!” said Pittsburgh Concert
Chorale Music Director Susan Medley, in anticipation of the performances.
At the invitation of the Department of Religion of Chautauqua Institution
and Jared Jacobsen, Coordinator of Worship and Sacred Music, 56 members
of the Pittsburgh Concert Chorale members sang with the 130 voice Chautauqua
Choir in both the morning and evening Sunday services in the 5,000 seat
amphitheater on the Institution grounds.
The morning service included the double choir pieces “Heilig”
by Felix Mendelssohn-Bartholdy and “Cantate Sing to the Lord”
by Jim Leininger, as well as Fauré’s “Cantique de Jean Racine.”
The theme of the evening service was “Christmas in July,” featuring Lauridsen’s
“O Magnum Mysterium”, “Jesus Christ the Apple Tree”
(Elizabeth Poston) and “Mary’s Lullaby” (Gale Richard Price).
Both Mr. Jacobsen and PCC Director, Dr. Susan Medley, conducted. The performance
also included “Bogoroditse Devo” from Rachmaninoff’s All Night Vigil,
the featured work of the Chorale’s regular season classical performances
March 3 and 4, 2012.
This PCC appearance marked the Chorale’s second performance at Chautauqua.
In 2003, the PCC performed Amy Beach’s “Canticle of the Sun”,
originally written in 1908 for the Chautauqua Choir.
