CHORALE PRESENTS ARTHUR HONEGGER'S "King David"

Dramatic psalm work includes narration by WQED’s Stephen Baum

PITTSBURGH, PENNSYLVANIA – January 14, 2010 – The Pittsburgh Concert Chorale is pleased to present Arthur Honegger’s King David, narrated by WQED’s Stephen Baum, on March 6-7, 2010. "Last year, we featured one of the masterworks of the great French composer Francis Poulenc - his Gloria. Poulenc was a member of the famed "Les Six" group of composers, and this year, we celebrate the masterpiece of another Les Six member - Arthur Honegger's dramatic psalm King David. The narration by Stephen Baum will be an additional royal treat for our audience,” Music Director Katherine Mueller said.
In addition to the narration by Baum, the concert will feature soprano Katy Shackleton-Williams, contralto Daphne Alderson and tenor Dean Kokanos. The Academy Chamber Orchestra and organist David Billings will accompany the Pittsburgh Concert Chorale as they perform this dramatic psalm, first composed in 1921.
King David explores the life and times of the biblical figure King David over the course of 27 movements. Honegger used a variety of musical genres such as baroque, jazz and Gregorian chant to compliment the text written by Rene Morax. The concert continues the royally-inspired 25th anniversary season theme, “Music Fit for a King.” The season started in December celebrating the King of kings with works by Benjamin Britten, Randol Allen Bass and John Rutter. On May 1 and 2, the season ends as the PCC will “Jazz It Up!” by saluting the kings of jazz with David Pellow, Robert Rawsthorne and Tom Roberts.
King David will be presented at two locations in the North Hills: Ingomar United Methodist Church on Saturday, March 6th at 8:00 pm and Fox Chapel Presbyterian Church on Sunday, March 7th at 4:00 pm. Tickets for individual concerts, which can be purchased in advance or at the door for each performance, are: Adults: $20 (reserved) or $16 (unreserved), students: $8, and children under 12: free.
